Dr. Hernandez earned his undergraduate (Magna Cum Laude, 1986) and his medical degree (University Scholar, 1990) from the University of Santo Tomas Philippines, and completed his residency and fellowship training at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Clinical Campus. He then pursued a one-year subspecialty fellowship in Advanced Endoscopy at the University of Florida, Gainesville. Endoscopic ultrasound, intestinal cancers, and pancreatic diseases are among his areas of interest. A published author, he is the chairman of the editorial review board of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the official medical journal of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE). He is also a member of the national Publications Committee of the ASGE.

Dr. Hernandez is a board certified gastroenterologist, and served as a full time faculty member of the University of Wisconsin Medical School. Currently, he holds a clinical faculty appointment at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
